Money, honestly
What a visit to Nyika actually costs
Malawi has not published a current, dated fee tariff for Nyika, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What it can do is separate the one number that is genuinely confirmed, what Central African Wilderness Safaris charges for Chelinda Lodge, from everything that is a years-old figure, an undated range or our own estimate, and then build two honest budgets on top of that.
If you only want the answer
Treat every fee figure below as a range to confirm with Central African Wilderness Safaris (CAWS) before you book, because Malawi's park authority has published nothing current for Nyika. Two people camping at Chelinda for three nights likely lands somewhere between $280 and $495, built on an unconfirmed $10 per person daily park fee, a $3 to $15 vehicle fee, a camping rate that is not published at all so we estimate it by comparison with other Malawi parks, and $150 to $270 in fuel for the climb from Mzuzu. The same three nights on full board at Chelinda Lodge, where CAWS does publish a current 2026 rate, comes to about $2,680 to $2,840 for two in the July to November season.
The one thing this page cannot give you
Every other park in this network has a dated tariff sheet or a gazetted fee schedule behind its numbers. Nyika does not. Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife, the official source, does not have a working website as of this writing, and neither the Peace Parks Foundation nor the Nyika-Vwaza Trust publishes a current fee schedule. The most recent traceable figures come from an undated Peace Parks Foundation summary and a 2017 to 2018 Chelinda rate sheet, both older than we would normally accept for a budget page.
So this page does two things differently from the rest of the network. It labels every unconfirmed figure as unconfirmed rather than smoothing it into a clean total, and it builds its budgets on ranges wide enough to be honest about what we do not know. Confirm every fee line directly with Central African Wilderness Safaris, who run the Chelinda properties under concession, before you commit to a number.
What is confirmed, and what is not
One number on this page is solid: what CAWS charges for Chelinda Lodge, because CAWS publishes its own current rate. Almost everything else is old, undated or estimated. Sorting the two apart is the actual value of this page.
| Confirmed, dated | Unconfirmed or estimated |
|---|---|
| Chelinda Lodge, full board plus activities: $350 pppn Dec 2026, $410 pppn Jul–Nov 2026 (CAWS 2026 rate card) | International park entry: ±$10 per person per day, undated, the most recent traceable DNPW-linked figure |
| Children under 12: free entry, the one figure consistent across every source | Vehicle entry: $3 to $15 per day by weight class, from an undated older schedule |
| Horse safaris are not currently operating, per Malawi's official tourism site | SADC or regional visitor entry: $7, from a 2017–2018 rate sheet, probably outdated |
| Malawian citizen entry: MK 450 on the same old sheet, against a conflicting "$1" figure elsewhere | |
| Camping at Chelinda Campsite: no rate, operator or current status published anywhere | |
| Whether fees are billed per 24 hours or per calendar day: unpublished |
One figure to actively ignore: an approximately $75 per day entry fee circulates on at least one aggregator site. It has no traceable source and is far out of line with every comparable Malawi park; do not budget around it. For scale, African Parks' January 2024 tariff for Nkhotakota, a different Malawi park under different management, charged international visitors about $20 per day.
Budget one: self-drive camping, an estimate with real error bars
Somewhere between $280 and $495 for two people over three nights, and the width of that range is the honest answer, not a hedge. The park entry fee uses the ±$10 per person per day figure, since nothing better exists; the vehicle fee uses the full $3 to $15 published range because we have no way to narrow it. Camping at Chelinda Campsite has no published rate at all, so we estimate $10 to $20 per person per night by comparison with Liwonde's $12 per person Chinguni site, a similar self-catering setup at a different Malawi park under different management. That comparison is our own judgement call, not a Nyika-specific source, and we are telling you that plainly.
Whether Chelinda Campsite is even open is unconfirmed. Email Central African Wilderness Safaris or the Chelinda park headquarters before you build a trip around it, and pack for genuine cold: frost is recorded on the plateau from May to August.
| Line item | Basis | 3 nights, 2 people |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry (2 × ±$10/day × 3 nights) | Undated, unconfirmed | ±$60 |
| Vehicle entry ($3–15/day × 3 nights) | Undated range | $9–45 |
| Camping at Chelinda Campsite (2 × $10–20 est. × 3 nights) | Our own comparison estimate, unsourced to Nyika | $60–120 |
| Fuel from Mzuzu, plateau climb (pump price, Sep 2026) | Estimated distance, see fuel section | $150–270 |
| Total | n/a | $280–495 |
Food and drinking water are on top of this and unpriced; there is no shop at Chelinda. Fishing permits, if you plan to use them, are arranged at Chelinda park headquarters rather than at the gate, and no fee figure is published for those either.
Budget two: full board at Chelinda Lodge, the number that IS current
About $2,680 to $2,840 for two people over three nights, self-driving up from Mzuzu. Chelinda Lodge is the one accommodation figure on this page you can rely on: $410 per person sharing from July to November 2026, dropping to $350 in December, on a full-board-plus basis that bundles most of the activity menu, night drives, fly-fishing and mountain biking among them. Park fees are separate and still carry the same uncertainty as budget one.
Chelinda Camp, the simpler dam-side sibling with the same activity menu, publishes no current rate at all; ask for both quotes when you enquire, since it sits below the Lodge in price. If a remote night away from Chelinda appeals, Juniper Forest campsite is referenced in older trekking notes but has no operator, rate or confirmed status; raise it with CAWS rather than assuming it exists.
| Line item | Basis | 3 nights, 2 people |
|---|---|---|
| Chelinda Lodge, full board plus activities (2 × $410, Jul–Nov 2026) | CAWS 2026 rate card, confirmed | $2,460 |
| Park entry, extra (2 × ±$10/day × 3 nights) | Undated, unconfirmed | ±$60 |
| Vehicle entry ($3–15/day × 3 nights) | Undated range | $9–45 |
| Fuel from Mzuzu, plateau climb (pump price, Sep 2026) | Estimated distance, see fuel section | $150–270 |
| Total | n/a | $2,680–2,840 |
Whether Chelinda Lodge's rate already includes the daily park fee is not stated anywhere we could verify; the lodge's own material simply notes fees are separate. Flying in via charter to the Chelinda airstrip removes the fuel and vehicle lines but adds a charter cost that no operator publishes; ask Ulendo Airlink or Fly Nyasa for a quote if the road does not appeal.
The remoteness cost: fuel from Mzuzu and the plateau road
Nyika takes commitment to reach, and the driving is the real cost most people underestimate. The standard route runs tar as far as Rumphi, the last town of any size and the last fuel, then dirt via the M24 to Thazima Gate, then roughly 60 km of steep, winding dirt climbing onto the plateau to Chelinda. From Mzuzu, the north's regional hub and the practical base, allow 3 to 4.5 hours; from Lilongwe allow 6 to 8 hours on a considerably longer day.
Our sources give conflicting total-kilometre figures for these routes and explicitly say to trust the hours instead, so we do the same, and that honesty carries through to the fuel estimate. Assuming a blended average speed of around 45 km/h on tar-then-dirt, 3 to 4.5 hours each way works out to roughly 135 to 200 km one way, call it 270 to 400 km for the round trip from Mzuzu, plus another 50 to 100 km once you are actually driving the plateau. A loaded 4x4 on a slow, steep dirt climb can easily use 14 to 16 litres per 100 km, so budget 45 to 80 litres for the whole visit. At MWK 5,863 per litre, about $3.38, data current to 7 September 2026 and tracking Malawi's regulated diesel price, that is roughly $150 to $270. There is no fuel anywhere in the park or at Chelinda; fill up, and carry jerry cans, in Rumphi.
Getting there, and paying once you arrive
A 4x4 is consistently required or strongly recommended, above all for the Thazima to Chelinda climb, and becomes non-negotiable once the November to April rains set in. An ordinary car manages the tar as far as Rumphi; do not take one past the gate. Mobile signal on the plateau is unverified, so download maps before you leave Mzuzu or Lilongwe.
There is no online payment portal for Nyika. Book the Chelinda properties by email at reservations@cawsmw.com or by phone on +265 888 822 398. Whether card or mobile money works at any gate is unverified, so carry cash, in both kwacha and US dollars, as your working assumption rather than your backup plan.
Where the guesswork bites hardest
- The park entry fee could genuinely be $10, or it could be something else entirely; nobody has published a current, dated rate since at least 2018.
- Ignore the roughly $75 per day entry figure some aggregator sites quote. It has no traceable source and is out of line with every comparable Malawi park.
- Camping at Chelinda has no public price at all, and we could not confirm the campsite is currently open. Do not build a shoestring plateau trip around it without emailing CAWS first.
- The vehicle fee spans a five-to-one range, $3 to $15, by weight class, and nobody states whether it is charged per 24 hours or per calendar day.
- The only number on this entire page you can take to the bank is what CAWS charges for Chelinda Lodge itself, because CAWS is the one party here that actually publishes a current rate.
- There is no fuel inside the park or at Chelinda. The last reliable pump is Rumphi, well before the climb onto the plateau begins.
- Horse safaris are advertised in the present tense by several operators; Malawi's own tourism site confirms the operation is not currently running. Kuti Wildlife Reserve is the horseback alternative it suggests instead.
