Month by month

Nyika in October

October delivers the sharpest dry-season light of the year, then quietly starts turning: rain is already tripling before the month is out.

If you only want the answer

October is Nyika's hottest month on record, 26.1°C by day, but the first hints of the wet season are already showing: rain rises to 21 mm over 4 days, enough that our own data already shifts October's verdict to shoulder.

October weather: the hottest page of the year

October posts the highest day temperature anywhere on Nyika's thirty-year chart, 26.1°C, nearly two degrees above September, while nights hold at 13.1°C, the warmest since April. It still reads as a dry-season month on the ground, short grass and clear light, but the numbers are already turning.

Rain triples from September's single wet day to 4 days and from 6 mm to 21 mm. It is not yet the wet season proper, but it is enough that our own data marks October's verdict as shoulder rather than prime, even though CAWS groups September and October together as a single high-season stretch on price.

The first crack in the dry season

Roan and eland are still easy to find against grass that has not yet started regrowing in earnest, and the escarpment views and mountain biking tracks that define the dry season remain at their best, arguably their sharpest of the year, since October's warmth clears haze without yet bringing the rain that will soon soften the ground.

Leopard sightings on night drives keep the same pattern as every other month, real but not guaranteed, best treated as a numbers game across several drives rather than one.

Timing the shoulder

October still falls inside the $410 per person high-season rate at Chelinda Lodge, the same figure that has applied since July, so there is no pricing signal yet that the season is turning, only the weather data.

One concrete tip: if biking or the escarpment views matter most to your trip, come in the first half of October rather than the second. The rain already visible in the monthly average tends to build toward the month's end, ahead of November's clearer wet-season start.
