Month by month

Nyika in January

January sits at the top of Nyika's rain chart: 571 mm falling over 30 of the month's 31 days, the wettest single month the thirty-year record shows anywhere on the plateau. It is also, not by coincidence, the start of the four months when Nyika's grassland carries more orchid species than anywhere else in south-central Africa.

If you only want the answer

January is orchid country, not big-game country. Day highs hold around 21.6°C, nights around 14.1°C, and rain falls on all but one day of the month. Come for the flowers and the empty plateau, not for classic game drives.

January weather: peak rain, peak flowers

The thirty-year record puts January at 21.6°C by day and 14.1°C at night, with 571 mm of rain spread across 30 of the month's 31 days. That is the single wettest month anywhere on Nyika's calendar, ahead of even February. The grassland responds in kind: this is the start of the window when more than 200 orchid species flower across the plateau, the richest concentration anywhere in south-central Africa, and January puts you right in the middle of it rather than at either edge.

Roan antelope and eland do not vanish in the rain, but the grass they stand in grows tall enough to swallow them, and a species you would pick out from 200 metres in July can disappear at 50. Leopard sightings on the night drives out of Chelinda get harder too: high density does not mean high visibility once the cover thickens. Expect a quieter game log and a fuller photo card of flowers, mist and grassland birds instead.

What the rain actually costs

The road up from Thazima Gate is slow at the best of times and genuinely difficult in January mud, and self-drivers should build real slack into any plan that starts or ends on that climb. Exactly which internal roads close for the month is not published by anyone, CAWS included, so the honest move is to ask directly when you book.

If Chelinda Campsite or the Juniper Forest site are running at all in January, expect nights in the low teens and rain on the tent fly rather than frost, since the hard cold belongs to the dry months from May. A soaked camp at 2,300 metres is a cold camp even without ice on the grass.

Booking January

CAWS's published Chelinda Lodge rate covers December at $350 per person and July to November at $410; January itself is not quoted anywhere on their site, so confirm both the rate and whether the lodge is open before you build a trip around it. Chelinda's total bed count is small in any month, 16 at the lodge and roughly 14 to 16 more at the camp.

One concrete tip: pack a dry bag for cameras and optics for orchid photography on foot, since you will be walking off the vehicle tracks into wet grass, and a soaked camera bag ends that part of the trip fast.
