Month by month
Nyika in September
September is the year's biggest temperature jump, still bone dry, and the one month that genuinely lets you stack game drives, biking and fishing into a single stay.
If you only want the answer
September warms sharply, days jumping to 24.3°C from August's 21.5°C, while rain stays negligible at 6 mm over a single day. It is also the month Nyika's trout season opens.
September weather: the year's biggest jump
September posts the largest single-month temperature jump on Nyika's chart, days rising nearly three degrees to 24.3°C while nights ease to 11.5°C, both comfortably above August's readings. Rain barely registers, 6 mm over a single day, so the ground stays as firm and the grass as short as at any point in the dry season.
Roan, eland and zebra remain easy to find on the open ridges, and this still sits inside CAWS's confirmed high-season pricing, $410 per person at Chelinda Lodge, the same rate that has applied since July.
The trout season opens
September is the month Nyika's trout fishing switches on. Permits are arranged at Chelinda's park headquarters rather than at the gate, the rules are fly-only with a single hook, and the season then runs straight through to April, so anyone building a fishing trip around Nyika should treat September as the earliest realistic start date.
Combining the plateau's activities
This is genuinely one of the better months to stack activities in a single stay: warm, dry days for game drives and mountain biking across the plateau's grassland tracks, cool clear nights for the leopard drives, and now open water for a rod as well. Few months let you reasonably plan all three without one of them being compromised by weather.
One concrete tip: if fly-fishing is part of your plan, ask CAWS to confirm permit arrangements when you book the lodge rather than on arrival, since permits are issued at Chelinda headquarters and not bundled automatically into every rate.
